SITAR

The sitar was developed in India in the 18th century.

It is one of the most popular musical instruments from India.

It is a string instrument.

It is mainly made of wood.

Interestingly, the main gourd or the toomba is made of pumpkin!

This is because the pumpkin acts as a nice sound box.

The sitar has seven main strings and eleven sympathetic strings.

The artists plays the instrument by plucking the strings.

TABLA

The tabla is a drumming instrument.

It consists of two drums called tabla and dagga.

The tabla is about 11 inches long while the dagga is about 10 inches long.

The tabla is made of wood and the top is covered with a piece of stretched skin.

is wrapped around the wooden frame with the help of leather strings and round wooden blocks.

The dagga is usually made of brass or copper.

SHEHNAI

The shehnai is a wind instrument and is made of wood and metal.

The outer part of the shehnai is made of wood with a metal bell at the tip of the instrument.

It is usually 20 inches long.

It is played by blowing into reed and using fingers to control flow of air.

It produces a vibrating sound.

MRIDANGAM

The mridangam or pakhawaj is one of the oldest Indian musical instruments.

It has been played by Indians for more than 2, 000 years.

It is made of wood shell, around 27 inches long, covered with skin on both sides.

It is used widely for dance performances.

It is believed that God created the tabla and dagga by chopping the mridangam in two half pieces.
